Philosophy of Care
I’m often asked why I still practice medicine at an age when most physicians have retired. It is simple; the patients I am honored to care for in Pagosa Springs are from all walks of life, from many parts of the country, and have life stories that no fiction writer could ever fabricate.
In my medical training, I was taught to be on the patient’s level, to present diagnosis and treatment in language that they clearly understand and make decisions together because they feel comfortable and trusting in our discussion. It works. Good medicine is when there is genuine trust and communication. And if I don’t overhear a new patient say, “Hey, he’s a nice guy” at the front desk when he/she checks out, I haven’t done my job.
